Decorative Overlay Lamination

Neenah Paper Technical Products offers a line of backers designed to reinforce thin decorative papers (foils) used in the manufacture of RTA (Ready-To-Assemble) furniture. These backers provide stiffness for handling materials used in edge banding, as well as a gluing base which can be directly applied to the surface of structural components. In these applications, the thin decorative papers can be laminated to the backer by using a roll laminator to activate a glue line which can either be customer-applied or purchased as part of the Neenah Paper Technical Products backing.
Backers are often used as carriers of overlay materials such as printed papers and films. The backers provide additional stiffness, as well as a substantive gluing base for handling of the overlays during lamination. Our backers also provide excellent machineability to overlays (which makes them easier to use), along with an important bridging effect to help hide imperfections in composite boards, such as MDF and particle board.
Products recommended for this application include Type 5774P0 (7 mil) and 0783P0 (10 mil), but most backers within a 7 to 14 mil range are acceptable.
Adhesive Recommendations
When laminating Neenah Paper Technical Products overlay backers to paper and film substrates, best results are usually attained when using heat activated adhesive systems. Water-based adhesive systems can cause fibers to rise on the surface of the backer, causing unevenness showing through the decorative paper.
